Hi dik...usually I use an "undercoat" of Pantone warm gray marker...then add gradations and subtleties with black Prismacolor pencil. This particular one, I think, was just black Prismacolor over a xerox of the line drawing. I did it on a slightly rough board, which gave the texture to it.
I love being a channel for creativity and since roughly 1979 I've been creating comics covers and pages, graphic novels, animation background designs, illustrations, and more.

Paul, what media are you using to get that look? Grease pencil? Graphite? Charcoal? Watercolor or Pastel paper?
I love the look of uneven grit on metal surface, I think many people would try to render it on smooth board, but then it would just be kinda boring...
